Career_of_sales asked:

I know there is a lot of divisions of detectives, so the one I am most interested in is Homicide, what does it take to become a Homicide detective, how long, what kind of steps are needed, and what kind of education is needed to become a detective?

One Response to “How does someone become a police detective?”

  1. Detectives are promoted from the patrol division, so you must first become a police officer and put your time in on the streets.

The actual selection procedure is determined by each individual department, so it can vary quite a bit. As a general rule, plan on spending about 3-5 years on patrol before you are eligible. The department will give you the training you need once you are selected, but a degree in criminal justice will help.
